Spanning from the north of Boggabri, NSW to the south of Maules Creek, NSW lies the nationally-listed, critically endangered, white box gum woodland; the Leard State Forest. With two coal mines already existing within the boundaries of the forest in 2014 a new Super coal mine would start to break ground. The Maules Creek Coal Mine owned by Whitehaven Coal would divide community members and host the longest standing mining blockade camp in Australian history.
